10 Lessons Working in Stone

Optionally, we can work with different types of stone that you need to purchase yourself. I will be happy to advise you.

Hard stone types such as French limestone, marble or Belgian bluestone are more suitable to specifically perform stonemasonry skills and techniques on.

Softer stone such as serpentine and alabaster are easier to work with a rasp, file or sandpaper.

What to do:

-Making preliminary studies/designs in small and techniques of working with clay. Building up form through addition.

-Executing a final form in stone and the technical skills of stone carving

What will we learn

– The essence of sculpture, form language.

– Learning to look and think like a sculptor

– The meaning of mass and residual space

– The difference between making something fun and a sculpture

– Thinking in stone ie removing material instead of adding. How do you start? What should be removed first? The basic technique of stone carving and the steps involved.

– Which chisel is used for what and how do you work with it. During the lessons we work exclusively manually instead of mechanically.

– Grating, filing and possibly polishing techniques.

– To have or not to have a pedestal under your sculpture and how to determine it.

Basic tools are provided for everyone to get started, it is recommended that you purchase your own tools as they are the most comfortable to work with.

Although we work in a group, everyone is guided on an individual level and the emphasis is on finding and developing your own personal visual language. So you are going to decide for yourself what you make. We are not all going to make or recreate the same thing from a picture we found on the Internet or the like.

With good weather, work may also be done outside.
